Grow ground cherries to enjoy with your little ones! They are the perfect toddler food experience. Close to the ground and held in tiny paper packages, each one can be unwrapped by small hands to reveal the sweet, delicious gem of a fruit inside. Ground cherries* look just like mini-tomatillos on the plant and are yellow and slightly translucent when ripe. The fruit is roughly the size and texture of a small grape. The flavor has almost a hint of the tropics–a sweet and tangy combination of pineapple and strawberry with something all its own. Absolutely delicious and suitable for fresh eating, cooking, and canning (though ours rarely made it far from them garden).
At 18 months old, our son Merle delighted in sitting in our ground cherry patch slowly unwrapping and savoring fruit after fruit. It never got old. The plants are also hardy and prolific. Hopefully you’ll love them as much as us, because they’ll volunteer to come back year after year.
*This is the variety we’ve been growing from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and hope to check out some others too.
